Learn More About UFSMA

The Utah Floodplain and Stormwater Management Association (UFSMA) began as the State Floodplain Management Association led by Nancy Barr in 1993. It started as a small group of State and local floodplain managers who shared common interests in floodplains, environment protection, the National Flood Insurance Program and floodplain mapping. This group met quarterly and held its first annual conference in Spring of 1994. Nancy along with Sid Smith from Davis County Public Works, and Marilyn O’dell from NRCS, provided the foundation and strong leadership in this Association that has allowed it to grow for over a decade.

The Association added stormwater into their name and officially became the Utah Floodplain and Stormwater Management Association (UFSMA). Our annual conference is always a success largely because of the local experts who share their challenges and successes from the past year. We also have national speakers to bring in new perspectives and share their stories. Each year at the conference, we have an awards banquet where we recognize those who have excelled in floodplain or stormwater management. We also play games and give prizes and enjoy each other’s company.

Tours have also been successful at our conference as we have looked at great achievements in floodplain and stormwater management including Jordanelle Reservoir (the Dam Tour of 2008), Cedar City’s Fiddler’s Canyon massive Debris Basin and in 2010 a tour of the new Airport in St. George.  We have toured the areas of St. George and Santa Clara that were devastated by the floods of 2005 where erosion caused the bank of the Santa Clara River to give away and homes were lost into the River.

The Association is over 100 members strong and we have developed a great community for sharing and networking. Membership includes those from local towns, cities, counties, professional engineers, consultants, state government and federal partners. We know each other by name and can call on each other when needed. Our conference fee is your annual membership fee for UFSMA, which includes your conference registration, sneak peak to yearly trainings and CFM examination dates.

We are looking forward to adding more to our Association by becoming a chapter of the Association of State Floodplain Manager, the national association of floodplain and stormwater professionals.

We will also be adding more training and getting more local partners involved in our Association.
